A Time Without Light

The electricity’s been out for months,
The bill too high, no way to pay.
As a kid, it wasn’t much of a fuss,
Spent my days outside, in the sun’s warm sway. Gas camp stoves boiled water for us,
At night, we’d carry pots to the tub,
Mixing with the cold, creating warmth —
A bath, though fleeting, felt like a hug.
Exposing parts of the body to the cool air,
We’d never get enough of that warm, fleeting flow, Holding the pot overhead, pouring slow,
Trying to mimic a shower, with care.
The suds would rinse, a moment of bliss,
As hot water covered our skin, just for a bit. Running through town, searching for plugs,
To charge our devices, just for a flick.
A cozy night as darkness fell,
Before everything closed, too dark to tell.
Devices charged, content downloaded —
For the quiet, dark night, we were well-prepared. Candles lined shelves, casting their glow,
A fragrant warmth in the evening’s flow.
The orange sun dipped, a summer’s end,
Signaling nightfall was just around the bend.
I’d think back then, as a child in the light,
When I grow up, I’ll give this life to my own, Turn off the power now and then, just right,
So they can experience this struggle, full-grown. I took pride in it, in the challenge we faced,
Life wasn’t easy, but it had its grace.
Now grown, I see I wouldn’t do the same, Electricity on, to ease the strain.
